Maine’s “Breakthrough” Case Percentage Roughly Pacing Its Percent Vaccinated

I’m still keeping tabs on those “breakthrough” COVID-19 cases among the fully vaccinated in Maine. Maine’s CDC released its most recent batch of numbers today, covering the period from April 15 to April 26. During that 11-day period:

  • Newly reported breakthrough hospitalizations were 82.6% of all newly reported hospitalizations (38 of 46);
  • Breakthrough deaths were 83.3% of newly reported deaths (5 of 6); and
  • Breakthrough cases were 72.3% of newly reported cases (2,182 of 3,016).

Maine’s COVID-19 dashboard reports that 73.93% of Maine’s population has now received a final vaccine dose.

For the past 2 months, February 28 to April 26, the newly reported breakthrough numbers are as follows:

  • Breakthrough hospitalizations, 61.4% (273 of 444).
  • Breakthrough deaths, 60% (201 of 335).
  • Breakthrough cases, 70.59% (22,537 of 31,926).

What does this say about vaccine effectiveness over time, and trending?
