ITALIAN MANSLAUGHTER CONVICTIONS FOR INADEQUATE EARTHQUAKE WARNING

Below is a link to a story about manslaughter convictions handed down in Italy today against 7 scientists and earthquake experts because they failed to predict and warn the public of an earthquake that resulted in numerous deaths.   There is probably no idea, no matter how apparently bizarre, that will not at some time and place be adopted by a state and policed by that state’s  power to punish and destroy.   In this story, we have a logical extension of the idea that there is no such thing as an accident:  http://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/oct/22/italian-scientists-jailed-earthquake-aquilahttp://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/oct/22/italian-scientists-jailed-earthquake-aquila

Many scientific experts happily promote the impression that they know far more than they can possibly know.  Faced with imprisonment for failing to apply their expertise to prevent undesirable outcomes, would  most concede the limits of their knowledge and their powers?

Update, 10/24/2012.  Four Italian earthquake experts have resigned from their appointed Italian goverment positions over the convictions and multi-year sentences handed down to their fellow earthquake experts.     On the way out the door, they warned that the convictions are likely to cause others not to get involved in the field of earthquake studies, disaster prevention and responses in Italy.  Whoa!  Who could have known?

Update 4/05/14.  In the following story, the author advocates taking a similar approach to prosecute those who publicly contradict his approved view of “global warming” or “climate change” issues.  Predictably, we will see that advocates for prosecution of scientists who contradict a certain approved, “consensus” viewpoint  will come from the political left.  The thought leaders on this end of the political spectrum are animated by the belief that humanity is indeed perfectible, if only it can be remade in the image of the thought leaders themselves.  Those who effectively stand in the way of the remaking/perfecting project are a clear and present danger that must be eliminated, rubbed out, extinguished.  Short of the ultimate, totalitarian solution of executing the opposition, there is no more effective way to neutralize them than to imprison them for giving expression to their obstructive thoughts.

But on the way to utopia, we might begin by suing them into submission, or so a number of state’s attorneys general have come to believe:
